Abstract

There is an interesting zone of confluence between the works of Jorge Luis Borges and the philosopher, scientist and man of letters Sir Thomas Browne, which is connected, in part, by common literary, philosophical and scientific influences, but also by an evident divergent operating-ludic movement that Borges seems to install when integrating the reading background of Browne´s universe into his own intellectual and original literary production. Pseudodoxia Epidemica: or Enquires into Very many received Tenents, And commonly presumed Truths by Sir Thomas Browne (1646) will be taken as a reference point, as well as the implicit theoretical view and theme that include the notions of “commonly”, “enquires”, “parody”, “presumed truths”, error, mestizaje and anthropophagy present in this work. The instrumental metaphor of the ying and yang will be also used as a tool of interpretation and construction meaning to read Pseudodoxia in and from Inquisiciones and Otras inquisiciones by Jorge Luis Borges.
