This article aims to demonstrate how the process of aesthetic modernization of dance in the city of São Paulo kept close links with the state apparatus at the Municipal and State levels. The objective is to elucidate cultural practices of people and institutions, which intertwined processes of aesthetic transformations, transition between cultural elites and procedures of artistic legitimacy. As a starting point and motto of this discussion, I will present a description of the general aspects that characterized a significant part of the scenic dance productions in the city of São Paulo throughout the 1970s, emphasizing the experiences of Ballet Stagium, Municipal Ballet and Teatro Galpão , in a second moment, to deal with the relations between the São Paulo artistic segment and the state power that made possible the formation of a cultural dance elite that assumed the characteristics of a coalition of experts.
