Abstract

The article studies the relationships between Uruguayan Independent theatre and the State making emphasis on its evolution since its origins until today. I define the ´theatre of art´ as the fundamental ingredient and describe de principles that govern this organization in Montevideo and Buenos Aires. I analyze the reason why the history of Independent Theatre in Uruguay grows at the same time with the one in Buenos Aires also looking up to Europe. I show a general view of the main aspects of Independent Theatre during the military dictatorship (1973/ 1985) and the return to democracy. I analyze the effects that the arrival of the Frente Amplio to the government of Montevideo and of the country, describing and making a thought about the politics of the actual government and its consequences.
